Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Having a bachelor’s degree is not a guarantee of one’s success. However, the fact remains that this academic degree is a requirement if you want to enter the professional world. Therefore, in the process, usually prospective students will conduct a number of researches to discuss with many people before deciding on a college major.
By 2021, nearly 40% of US adults attending college regret their choice of major, according to a Federal Reserve survey. The reason behind this regret is not far from money problems. In fact, there are a number of majors whose graduates earn the lowest salaries.
Job exchange site from the United States (US), ZipRecruiter surveyed more than 1,500 college graduates who are looking for work. As a result, the majors that most make graduates regret because their salaries are low are journalism, sociology, communications and education.
ZipRecruiter found that alumni strongly associated their sentiments about their major with job prospects. They also tend to have no regrets when pursuing a STEM field.
Here are the 10 majors with the lowest salary graduates:
- Journalism (87%)
- Sociology (72%)
- Art (72%)
- Communication (64%)
- Education (61%)
- Marketing Management + Research (60%)
- Medical Assistant (56%)
- Political Science and Government (56%)
- Biology (52%)
- English Literature (52%)
So, should prospective students avoid social studies because of the low salary prospects? Not really, according to BestColleges senior author Mark Drozdowski.
Because, in fact, there are many skills from social majors that are also very much needed by the world of work today.
“It cannot be denied that skills honed through humanities studies, such as critical thinking, written and oral communication, reasoning, and persuasive argumentation – are highly sought after in the world of work today,” he wrote.
