Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Ahead of the 2024 Presidential Election (Pilpres), one important issue to anticipate is the widespread spread of disinformation and buzzers. This was conveyed by the Chairman of the Regional Representative Council (DPD) of the Republic of Indonesia, La Nyalla Mattalitti, at the MPR Annual Session, Joint Session of the DPR and DPD in 2023.
La Nyalla said that electability can be driven through numbers, which are then disseminated by buzzers on social media. This, he said, would then lead to a narrative of blasphemy or blind praise.
“And in the end, the voters are presented with a reality that is shaped in such a way,” he said at the Nusantara Building, Wednesday (16/8/2023).
“Indonesia has bigger, more important and more urgent work to do than we are preoccupied with the hustle and bustle and high costs of Western-style democracy,” he added.
Furthermore, La Nyalla said that Indonesia must prepare itself to welcome the golden year, namely to face the demographic explosion of the productive age population.
For information, the government’s concerns about buzzers and disinformation ahead of the presidential election have previously been raised by the Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Politics and Security (Menkopolhukan) Mahfud MD.
He said the government had prepared various mitigation measures to fight hoaxes. One of them is due to the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) technology which also facilitates the spread of hoaxes.
“Certainly. It’s prepared [untuk AI]. That’s all for sure [hoaks] a lot from there. We prepared everything,” he said a few moments ago.
