Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Corona virus continues to mutate by producing new variants. Recently, researchers discovered the newest strain of the Covid virus.
The Covid variant BA.2.86 otherwise known as Pirola has been detected in several countries including the US and New Zealand. Pyrola has more than 30 mutations in its spike protein compared to XBB.1.5, the Omicron variant which is the dominant strain in the US.
“Such a high number of mutations is important,” said Yale Medicine infectious disease specialist Scott Roberts, quoted from The Independent, Wednesday (6/9/2023).
The main symptoms of the Pirola variant are similar to the classic symptoms found in other Covid variants. Including runny nose, headache, tiredness, sneezing and sore throat. But in the symptoms of this variant there are no symptoms such as fever and cough.
Rommel Tickoo, director of internal medicine at Max Healthcare, says that regardless of the variant of Covid, the way to stay protected is the same.
Older people, who have co-morbidities, have the highest risk of developing severe disease.
In addition, don’t forget to wash your hands and wear a mask in crowded places, where this will protect a person not only from Covid-19 but also other respiratory infections including the flu.
“If someone has a fever and respiratory symptoms, it’s best to avoid leaving the house. If they have to, they should wear a mask. And people who are at higher risk of developing severe illness should also wear a mask when going to crowded places.” he said.
