Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Too much cholesterol in the blood can be fatal. This condition can endanger heart health and trigger a stroke.
People with high cholesterol should pay attention to a healthy lifestyle, including understanding some of the restrictions that can trigger high cholesterol. Because, the recurrence of high cholesterol is often triggered by food.
Here are some types of food that need to be avoided so that cholesterol does not soar high, according to cardiologist Elizabeth Klodas who is also the author of “Slay the Giant: The Power of Prevention in Defeating Heart Disease″
1. Cake, biscuit, cake
Mass-produced biscuits, cakes and pastries are often dense in calories, low in nutrients and high in fat (especially saturated fats such as butter) and sugar. All of these are causes of high cholesterol.
Replace them with healthier snacks at home, and control the amount and type of fat and sugar you use.
2. Red meat
Red meat in any form such as ribs, steak, ground beef should be avoided. You can replace it with lean meat in small quantities.
Instead of getting protein, you can turn to lean poultry, fish, and nuts. Keep in mind, poultry also contains saturated fat, so avoiding red meat doesn’t mean you can overeat chicken.
If you have high cholesterol, another delicious lean protein alternative is white-flesh fish such as tuna and snapper.
3. Processed meat
The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified processed meat as a carcinogen, namely a substance that can cause cancer.
Processed meats such as sausages, meatballs, nuggets, hot dogs, salami and bacon are also high in sodium and saturated fat. Usually processed meat comes from fatty cuts of beef or chicken.
4. All fried foods
Various fried foods, especially fried until dry, contain high cholesterol so they should be avoided. Fried foods contain lots of calories and trans fats which increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.
In addition, consuming fried foods too often is also associated with an increased risk of heart disease, obesity and diabetes.
Alternative food for those of you who like fried: potatoes, kale, or broccoli baked until crunchy. Or, you can invest using air fryerwhich uses less oil.
