Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Russia’s 47-year wait to explore the Moon has come to an end. The Luna-25 mission was declared a total failure after it was destroyed on the Moon’s surface.
The Russian Space Agency, Roscosmos, said that Luna-25 had lost contact. However, the cause has not been disclosed in detail. It just stated there was a ‘technical problem’.
Valery Yegorov, former researcher of the Russian space program, said that this failure will affect the next Roscosmos mission. One of them is already planned for 2028 and beyond.
He indicated that the Luna-25 failure had something to do with an electrical problem. According to him, this is one of the effects of western sanctions on Moscow.
It is known, the launch of Luna-25 has been postponed several times over the last 5 years due to a series of sanctions from the United States and its allies, after the attack on Ukraine nearly a year and a half ago.
Sanctions from a number of countries, including the Joe Biden administration, have isolated Moscow. Even, The Moscow Times wrote that the punishment also had an impact on the Russian space industry, quoted Monday (21/8/2023).
The departure of Luna-25 is indeed proof for Russia in the midst of these sanctions. Apart from that, it is also hoped that this will open the way for Russia’s return to the Moon.
The mission was Russia’s first trip to the moon in 46 years. In 1976, Luna-24 landed on Earth’s satellite.
In addition, this mission is also expected to make Russia participate in the race to Earth’s satellite with the US, India and China. India is known to be landing Chandrayaan-3 on the south pole of the Moon.
So far only Russia, the US and China have carried out controlled landings on the Moon.
Russia’s mission to the Moon reportedly failed on Saturday, August 19 2023. The plane reportedly lost contact at that time and crashed into the surface of the Moon.
“The craft moved unpredictably into orbit and vanished after it collided with the lunar surface,” the agency said, quoted by Reuters.
Luna-25 which weighs 800 kilograms is planned to stay on the Moon for a year. The plane is tasked with collecting soil samples and looking for water.
