Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Everyone agrees that illness is a disaster. However, there are those who believe that behind the disaster there is ease and blessing.
That’s what happened to Edward’s family in Utah, United States of America. The pain suffered by one of his family members has even inspired a successful business to generate income. So, what’s the story?
The story begins when Judy Edwards, mother of 2 children, experienced constipation during defecation (BAB). Every time Judy wanted to poop, she was always cranky. He has taken various medicines, but to no avail. In fact, as time goes by, the constipation gets worse. The condition got even worse after Judy was diagnosed with piles or hemorrhoids, which added to her difficulties.
Until finally sometime in 2010, he saw a therapist. The therapist said that Judy had to change the way she defecated. Please note, Judy, like other Americans, generally uses a sitting toilet to defecate. The problem is, sitting toilets from a medical point of view are ineffective because there is no pressure on the stomach, making it more difficult to expel the stool. Meanwhile, the squat toilet makes a person’s stool come out more perfect because there is pressure on the stomach which reduces the capacity of the stomach.
Therefore, Judy inevitably had to squat during defecation because the toilet in her house was a sitting model. From here he spins the brain to find a way.
“He actually squatted down on the toilet but it was very uncomfortable. Then, tried to prop his feet up with books, buckets and household utensils so they could bend and put pressure on his stomach. However, all this failed and made him uncomfortable. ” Judy told the official Squatty Potty website.
When Judy had this problem, her son Bobby made a wooden squatting chair. The chair then becomes a wedge for the mother’s feet so that her bowel movements run smoothly. Thanks to the help of the object from the child, Judy finally felt comfortable and her stool came out smoothly. From here, he always uses the things his son made.
In Indonesia, squatting chairs are not a foreign thing. They are usually found in furniture repair shops and are sold cheaply. However, things were decidedly different in the United States where squatting chairs became something of a freak.
This oddity spread even more when Edward, Judy’s biological son, gave out Bobby’s squat chairs on Christmas Day to his constipated friends. Unexpectedly, it became very popular. Americans are in awe of the squat chair.
From here, many people pushed Edward’s family to sell it commercially. Finally, with a capital of US$ 35,000, the family started production of squatting chairs branded Squatty Potty which will be marketed on the family’s website.
Judy decided the bench should be made of plastic so that the price can be affordable. Unexpectedly they also got their first big order.
“The first order was for about 2,000 Squatty Potties that came from China in large full containers,” Bobby told CNBC International, quoted on Wednesday (23/8/2023).
Since then, Squatty Potty sales have been selling well. Even in its first year, the family was successful in making a profit of up to US$ 1 million or Rp. 16 billion. Now, citing the official website, the Edward family has received an investment of US$ 350,000 from Shark Tank and earned US$ 15 million or IDR 229 billion.
