Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – In ancient times there was a saying “more children, more fortune”. However, nowadays a more suitable saying is “more friends, more fortune”.
This is not just any saying. In fact, its truth has been validated by international research.
At least this is revealed in published research The Journal of Socio-Economics in 2008. It is known that friendships can give someone extra income.
Quoting CNBC International, Wednesday (13/9/2023), research found that the benefits of having good friends can increase life satisfaction and happiness. In addition, up to 85 thousand pounds sterling or around Rp. 1.6 billion per year.
Nick Powdthavee, a professor of behavioral science at Warwick Business School who was involved in the research, was also outspoken about this. He said that people who have high social networks have better life satisfaction than those who don’t.
Powdthavee analyzed 10 thousand people over 18 years using data from the British Household Panel Survey. He sought to see whether a person could be happy because of money or friends.
“It turns out that the results show that people can be happy not because of money, but because of the large network of friends,” the media quoted Powdthavee as saying.
When your network of friends becomes wider, the opportunity to make money becomes greater. As a result, happiness increases.
Not only that, the study also sought to analyze whether people are happier in friendship or marriage. It turns out that friendship comes out on top.
As a result of research conclusions that reveal friendship opens up opportunities to become rich, Powdthavee also reminds us to consider every job offer. Choose a job that can broaden your relationships.
“Don’t take a job that can reduce the intensity of social interactions even though it is highly paid. Because income is not solely generated from a permanent job. But also through opportunities that come from friendships,” he said.
Basically, build networking anywhere can provide benefits for every human being. Studies show that having the right friends can improve personal happiness and career.
However, it would be good for someone to have lots of friends, so that they can increase their chances of increasing their money. Therefore, don’t be complacent (lack of social interactions) if you want to have additional income.
“Especially if you are friends with rich people,” he stressed.
The reason is, according to a study published in a journal Nature, It was found that friendships can offer a way out for someone to escape the trap of poverty. Especially if you make friends with rich people.
More specifically, research led by Harvard Economist Raj Chetty analyzed Facebook friendships. There are 72 million people who are the “subject” of the research, with a composition of 84% of US adults aged 25 to 44 years.
Chetty measures the economic connectedness of a particular area, which allows someone to interact in an area with people of different socio-economic status. The results revealed that if poor children grew up in an environment where 70% of their friends were rich this would increase their future income by an average of 20%.
“These cross-class friendships, which researchers call economic connectedness, have a stronger impact than school quality, family structure, job availability, or the racial composition of a community,” the researchers said.
“That economic connectedness influences everything, from shaping aspirations and norms and careers to providing valuable information about schools and colleges, as well as providing connections to internships and job opportunities,” he added.
So, it is clear that a network of friends is very important. Apart from making us better known, it can also increase our chances of becoming rich.
