Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Rice prices have continued to creep up since last year. Especially, in the last month, the rate of increase in domestic rice prices seems to be getting out of control.

Price Increase Trend
“You need to pay attention to the price of rice, because it is still on an upward trend until the first week of September 2023. There is still an increase,” said Plt. Head of BPS Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti during the 2023 Inflation Control Coordination Meeting, Monday (11/9/2023).
BPS noted that the increase in rice prices was in line with the increase in grain prices at the farmer level, as well as the increase in rice prices at the milling and wholesale levels.
The increase in rice prices, he continued, was the main cause of inflation in August 2023 on a monthly basis and throughout 2023 until now (year to date/ ytd).
“The increase in grain prices for farmers in August 2023 will increase by 3.62% on a monthly basis for harvested dry grain (GKP) and increase by 5.82% for milled dry grain (GKG),” said Amalia.
He added, there are differences in the trend of changes in the average price of rice at retail on a month to month (monthly) and year on year (annual) basis.
“At retail it is not as high as the average change in the price of rice at the mill. If we compare, the highest increase was at the mill. The price of rice at retail rose 1.43% on a monthly basis and 13.76% year on year. However, at the mill it rose 2, 59% monthly and 20.27% year on year,” explained Amalia.
