Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – South African citizens cannot access the internet network to the fullest. The connection faltered after the fiber optic cable was hit by a rock in an underwater valley.
According to reports from BloombergThe West African Cable System which stretches some 16,000 kilometers under the sea from Europe to South Africa was damaged earlier this month.
As a result, all internet networks in South Africa are currently experiencing disruptions. Anne-Caroline Tanguy, a spokeswoman for Cloudflare, said the repairs were expected to be completed in September.
This underwater cable can only be repaired for about two months because it has to be repaired by a special ship, quoted Friday (25/8/2023).
The 40-year-old cable-layer ship Leon Thevenin, named after a French telegraph engineer, was added in Cape Town this week.
It is capable of working in extreme conditions and in shallow or deep water, according to the owners of Orange Marine, an underwater telecommunications company.
