Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Menko Marves) Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said he already knew the source of the illegal export of 5.1 million tonnes of nickel ore to China. He said the exports were thought to have come from South Kalimantan.
According to Luhut, this information was known from an investigation by the Corruption Eradication Commission. “That’s the 5.1 million tons, right? Now we have talked with the KPK about digitalization. The KPK has called me to explain because they are the ones who got it with us, because everything is digitalized, we have sorted out where it comes from in China, where it comes from in Kalimantan. South,” said Luhut in Jakarta, quoted on Saturday (9/9/2023).
Luhut not only knows about the source of the nickel location. He said he also knew who the perpetrator was, but did not reveal the identity of the perpetrator. “Who is that, we already know everything,” said Luhut.
The alleged illegal nickel export was first revealed by the Corruption Eradication Committee (KPK), which revealed the alleged illegal export of Indonesian nickel ore to China since 2021. Unmitigated, as many as 5 million tons of Indonesian nickel ore are suspected to have been smuggled into the Bamboo Curtain Country since 2021-2022. In fact, as is known, the Indonesian government has officially banned the export of nickel ore since 2020.
Luhut said he was still investigating whether or not this export was intentional. Because, he said, there is a possibility that the nickel was mixed with steel exports.
“But now what we are investigating is nickel mixed with iron in it. The question is, whether this was intentional or not, we are still looking for it. What level is it, the level is as low as 0.5,” said Coordinating Minister Luhut.
Therefore, he continued, the government is now making efforts to digitize all recording and monitoring systems, so that they are easy to track.
“So, we are investigating everything, for coal it is very difficult to cheat because it has been digitized, now we are entering nickel with the Attorney General, with the Corruption Eradication Commission we are also discussing everything, we will digitalize everything, so we can trace everything,” he said.
