Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Jennifer Bachdim told about her household with Irfan Bachdim, she also openly said that currently she is working alone to earn a living and allows her husband not to work.
As is well known, Irfan is unemployed because his contract with Persis Solo has expired, and now he has yet to find a new club for his career.
Irfan had received a job offer in Jakarta, although his wife agreed, living in Jakarta was certainly different from Bali. Jennifer may have to work to help her husband, employ assistants to drivers who can finally sacrifice quality time with her family.
Long story short, the job offer was rejected and Jennifer decided to make a living, while Irfan took care of the children.
“I think this is not a problem (to do). Irfan has been working (earning a living) since the beginning of our marriage. Now, I think this is the time for him to rest, spend time with the children,” said Jennifer, in the video on Melaney Ricardo’s Youtube account.
Jennifer added that since he was still active in the soccer club, Irfan had very limited time with his children. Call it when the child was born, Irfan only had a week with his family before finally returning to the field.
“Right now he can get closer to the children, and the children really need him,” he concluded.
Jennifer reiterated that Irfan’s decision to become a housewife is more important than making money.
Father & breadwinner in a legal perspective
The Rights and Obligations of Husband and Wife article 31 paragraph three of the Law of the Republic of Indonesia Number 1 of 1974 which regulates Marriage states that, “The husband is the head of the family and the wife is the housewife,” explaining the status and position of a husband.
Meanwhile, Article 80 paragraph 4 of the Compilation of Islamic Law specifically regulates the husband’s maintenance provisions. Husband is required to bear:
A living, kiswa and residence for the wife;
Household expenses, maintenance costs and medical expenses of wife and children; And
Education costs for children.
When an event occurs where a husband does not carry out his obligations, then based on the provisions of Article 34 paragraph 3 of the Marriage Law, “the wife has the right to file a claim for maintenance to the court if a husband does not provide for his family (children and wife) as his obligation.”
Therefore it is only natural that not a few people in Indonesia view men who become fathers of the household as irresponsible and ignorant.
But as time goes by, changing roles in earning a living is a very natural thing to happen. And sometimes, the decision to become a housewife can also arise due to different household situations and conditions.
Reflecting on the households of Irfan and Jennifer Bachdim, the decision to become a housewife might bring benefits. But of course this can only be done when there is a clear agreement between the two parties.
For households who wish to do this, the following are considerations that can be made financially.
Transfer of household financial management functions
If in general the husband earns a living and the wife manages the family finances, then this can change when there is a change in roles. Because it is quite difficult to carry out both of these tasks at the same time.
Whoever ultimately takes control of household financial management, must be aware of the importance of realizing the financial goals or aspirations of the household in the future.
When the party entrusted with this task turns out to be consumptive or cannot distinguish between wants and needs, then household finances will be at stake.
Also know that managing household expenses, he will be in charge of building an ideal emergency fund, choosing the right protection, and arranging the placement of funds for each family’s financial goals.
