Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The government is currently discussing the derivative regulations for the Personal Data Protection Law (UU PDP). The discussion is sure to involve all parties.
The Minister of Communication and Information (Menkominfo) Budi Arie Setiadi said the PDP Law would become a comprehensive legal umbrella. In addition, the PDP Law is also expected to encourage ethical and responsible innovation.
It is hoped that the formulation of derivative regulations for the PDP Law will improve the standards for processing personal data, both those that exist for the public and private sectors.
“The drafting that has been carried out since early January is a mandate of the PDP Law. Its implementation has so far involved various experts and academics before the existing draft is prepared for public testing,” Budi said as quoted from the official Kominfo website, Wednesday (30/8/2023).
Budi also hopes to get constructive input in organizing the National Forum for Personal Data Protection in 2023, especially for drafting Government Regulations (RPP).
“I hope that the enthusiasm that you conveyed in this forum can also be recorded in constructive input during the public consultation on the RPP UU PDP,” he said.
Currently, according to Budi, more and more people are aware of the importance of protecting personal data. This can also be seen from data from the International Association of Privacy Professionals in 2023, namely 68% of global consumers are worried about this.
More than a third or 85% of consumers are also said to want policy transparency regarding the use of personal data from service providers.
“This certainly shows that consumers as personal data subjects are increasingly aware of how important it is to protect privacy and personal data. This condition is understandable given the high number of data leaks that occur and the cost of handling them,” explained Budi.
Meanwhile, Budi said the PDP law, which was passed in 2022, would provide Indonesia with various opportunities. This rule will protect the fundamental rights of the community, to better business activities and innovation.
“The ratification of the PDP Law which was carried out in 2022 provided Indonesia with various opportunities. Both the opportunity to better protect the fundamental rights of the Indonesian people, to the facilitation of business activities and innovation more wisely,” said Budi.
