Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Elon Musk’s satellite network, Starlink, is certain to enter Indonesia. Internet service providers or ISPs and operators certainly don’t need to worry about this situation.
“There’s no need to worry. Everyone competes in a healthy and fair manner. In the end, it is the community’s customers who benefit from the service,” said Minister of Communications and Information Budi Arie Setiadi, Tuesday (12/9/2023).
Budi also ensured that the government would always provide the same level playing field. According to him, the government should not give privileges to anyone.
“We always provide the same playing field. The government’s job is not to have any privileges, it has to treat it the same as ISPs or mobile operators,” he explained.
There has been talk of SpaceX entering Starlink for some time. At that time, the satellite network is expected to be able to encourage internet access to 3T areas.
However, it is also feared that Musk’s presence will receive special treatment. For example, the Director of the ICT Institute, Heru Sutadi, said that foreigners were given the red carpet.
“If you are given a red carpet, you need to be afraid,” said Heru some time ago.
He noted that the rules for domestic operators are quite strict. So if Starlink can apply freely, it means that the playing field presented is not the same.
Previously, XL Axiata CEO Dian Siswarini said that Starlink’s entry must be accompanied by an equal playing field for all players. Both for foreign players and those in the domestic industry.
“A new global player has emerged, Elon Musk wants to enter. Wow, he has already entered here and then if he doesn’t get the same level playing field, he can be completely cleared,” said XL Axiata CEO, Dian Siswarini at the Detikcom Leaders Forum: Direction of the Indonesian Telecommunication Industry, at Jakarta, Thursday (24/8/2023).
