Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Cockroaches are one of the animals most people avoid. Besides being considered ridiculous, cockroaches are also a feared animal because they carry lots of bacteria.
However, who would have thought, the fact is that cockroaches are one of the strongest animals on earth. According to The Guardiansthe cockroach has a very strong bite, even 50 times greater than its small body weight.
According to the researchers, the strength of the cockroach bite is caused by jaws that can bite five times stronger than humans.
A published study Plose One found that when encountering hard materials, such as wood, cockroaches activate muscle fibers in the jaw to increase bite force to deal with repetitive and strenuous things.
“Our research is the first to measure the bite force of a common insect. And we found that the American cockroach, Periplaneta Americana, can generate a bite force about 50 times stronger than its own body weight,” said lead author of the study, Tom Weihmann, from the University’s department of zoology Cambridge, quoted Tuesday (22/8/2023).
“In relative terms, it’s about five times as strong as a human with jaws can produce,” Wihmann continued.
According to Weihmann, researchers want to understand cockroach bites because insects play an important role in many ecosystems. In addition, the findings are considered to be able to produce ‘engineering inspired by nature’.
According to reports The Guardiansthe team analyzed 300 bites made by specimen cockroaches, ranging from fast and weak bites to strong and long lasting ones.
“Short, weaker bites are produced by relatively fast muscle fibers, while longer, stronger bites are driven by additional muscle fibers that need time to reach their maximum strength,” says Weihmann.
