Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The United States (US) is preparing an update or updates from the Covid-19 vaccine dnature’s efforts to prevent a “tripledemic” which causes chaos because it attacks the respiratory system like last year. This latest vaccine is planned to be combined with the flu vaccine.
Launch AP newsin the fall of 2023, the first vaccine for the RSV virus (respiratory syncytial virus) which can cause infections in the respiratory tract and lungs will be launched to elderly people and pregnant women.
Doctors hope more people will get vaccinated to help prevent another “tripledemic,” like last year when hospitals were overwhelmed by the start of flu season, an onslaught of RSV, or respiratory viruses, and a coronavirus surge during the winter.
It is hoped that the latest COVID-19 vaccine will receive distribution approval in the near future. If this vaccine has been injected into the public, the Director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is optimistic that America will have the “strongest position” in avoiding another health disaster.
“There will be a lot of viruses this winter. That’s why we want to be ahead of the curve,” said CDC chief Dr. Mandy Cohen.
Why does the Covid-19 vaccine need to be updated?
The coronavirus that continues to develop will not disappear. Similar to how flu shots are updated every year, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is giving Covid-19 vaccine makers new prescriptions for this fall.
The updated injection has one target, namely a derivative of omicron called XBB.1.5.
The Covid-19 vaccine that the public has received since last year is a combination of injections that target the original type of coronavirus and a much earlier omicron version. This makes the first edition of the Covid vaccine outdated.
The FDA will soon decide whether each company has met safety, effectiveness and quality standards. Then the CDC must sign off before vaccinations begin.
A CDC advisory panel will meet on Tuesday to make recommendations on how best to use the newest shots.
Earlier this month, European regulators authorized Pfizer’s latest vaccine for the 2023 fall season, for adults and children as young as 6 months.
Are the New Vaccines Effective Enough?
Health officials are optimistic that the updated vaccine shots will be effective, unless there are new virus mutations.
Recent laboratory testing from vaccine makers and other research groups suggests that the updated vaccine will offer cross-protection.
The vaccinations or infections that the majority of the world’s citizens have currently received still help prevent severe Covid virus infections and death, but protection decreases over time, especially against milder infections as the virus continues to evolve.
“The best thing people can do to maintain a normal lifestyle is to continue getting booster shots,” said Duke University vaccine expert David Montefiori.
