Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Tech giants are competing to develop artificial intelligence (AI) technology. One of them is Google, which created the Bard service and recently plans to marry AI to the Assistant feature.
However, this turned out to have an impact on employees who were forced to lose their jobs.
Google plans to make layoffs following a change in strategy for its Assistant division. However, it did not mention the number affected by this policy.
Vice President of the Assistant unit, Peeyush Ranjan, said only a small number of employees were affected by this new policy.
Those affected by layoffs will get 60 days to find another job in another Google business unit, quoted from CNBC International, Friday (18/8/2023).
The Assistant is planned to be made even more powerful with the support of Generative AI technology. According to Ranjan, the product will have the technology of a large language model or LLM.
In that way, it is hoped that Assistant users will get a high-quality experience.
“We’ve seen the huge potential of generative AI to change people’s lives and see a huge opportunity to explore what Assistant with added power, powered by LLM,” he explained.
Google spokeswoman, Jennifer Rodstorm, explained that an LLM can help Assistant much better. He promised that Google will continue to provide the best experience for its users.
“Hundreds of millions of people use Assistant every month and we are committed to providing them with a high-quality experience,” said Rodstorm.
In addition to the layoffs, there have also been changes to the Speech team which handles voice commands. For example team head Francoise Beaufays moved to oversee the Bard and Assistants.
