As parents, Zahriya and Riyanti need to struggle many times over to raise their only child, Apriliana. This 8-year-old child is a sufferer of Microcephalus which makes his head smaller than other children his age. Apriliana’s brain development is not normal so that every day she can only lie stiffly while staring blankly at the ceiling of the rented house which is a silent witness to the hardships of this small family’s life.
Not even sitting or crawling, even to defecate, April had to be assisted with a laxative in the form of a tube inserted through the anus because her pelvic bones were no longer connected properly.
“We used to go to therapy 3x a week for 2 years, but then there was no change. The doctor said that April had a small skull so it was difficult for the nerves to develop. We were desperate and had run out of funds to go back and forth (to the doctor), so we decided to stop taking therapy. and maximizing care at home,” said Zahriya to the doinggood.id team.
Zahriya, who only graduated from elementary school, had to work hard to support his family by working as a pedicab driver and also selling cakes to his customers. Meanwhile, her mother takes care of April at home while selling snacks to supplement her income.
From this business, the couple can earn around IDR 30,000 a day. A very small nominal, considering the daily needs plus April’s medical needs.
Every two weeks, April is scheduled to consult a doctor at Bhayangkara Hospital. In order to save on transportation costs, April’s family always goes for a consultation every two weeks by using a rickshaw from their house to Bhayangkara Hospital, which is approximately 12 kilometers away.
“Because his father has a rickshaw, we usually use a rickshaw from here to the hamlet to his grandmother’s house. Rest for a while, then use it from there and then continue to take the rickshaw to the hospital,” said Zahriya.
With various limitations, this family is always long-suffering and broad-minded. Nevertheless, how happy they would be if any help came to them.
